The president of the Portuguese Professional Football League, Pedro Proença, praised this Wednesday the election of Fernando Gomes to the FIFA Council, associating it with the international recognition of what has been done by the sport in the country.
“The election of Fernando Gomes to the FIFA Council is yet another achievement for Portuguese football and reinforces the recognition and prestige that Portugal enjoys at the center of world football decisions,” said the official, quoted on the LPFP website.
Fernando Gomes, president of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), was today unanimously elected to the FIFA Council, during the 47th UEFA Congress, which takes place in Lisbon.
In a short note, Pedro Proença considers that “it is increasingly important to have football figures in the main international decision-making bodies”.
“On my behalf and on behalf of Liga Portugal, I salute Fernando Gomes for this election and wish him all the best for the position he will now hold”, he concluded, referring to the 71-year-old manager.
The LPFP saluted Fernando Gomes, who presided over the League between 2010 and 2011, before going to lead the FPF, congratulating himself on the fact that he has now reached “one of the highest positions in sports leadership”.
Fernando Gomes, who was, until today, vice-president of UEFA, was the only candidate to vote for the four-year term, after Noël Le Graët resigned as president of the French Football Federation (FFF).
