How to Create and Use an Omoji on Your OnePlus Device

Omojis are OnePlus’ take on Apple’s Memoji avatars. Here’s how you can create and use them.

Emojis and stickers have always been a great way to liven up traditional text messaging. Furthermore, the rise in popularity of services like Bitmoji has helped add a personal touch to rather expressionless chats. If you have friends who use an iPhone, chances are you’ve seen them send stickers and videos using an interactive avatar that looks just like them.

OnePlus devices running OxygenOS 13 now give you the option of creating a playfully animated avatar of yourself—aptly dubbed an Omoji. In this quick read, we’ll go over what an Omoji is and how you can create one on your OnePlus phone.

What Is an Omoji and How Do I Create One?

Seeing how Bitmoji helped make Snapchat messages more fun, Apple introduced Animoji with the release of the iPhone X in 2017. Animoji made good use of the new True Depth sensors in the phone to accurately map out facial expressions onto a select set of non-customizable avatars.

Soon after the release of Memoji in 2018 which allowed users to create a personalized 3D avatar of themselves, several Android manufacturers followed suit releasing similar features on their phones. A few developers and their apps even made it possible for anyone to create a Memoji on Android.

OnePlus’ Omoji is essentially heavily inspired by Memoji and one could even argue that it looks the closest to the original design. If you’ve recently updated to OxygenOS 13, you should already see a prompt in the Settings app suggesting you create one.

To create an Omoji on your OnePlus device:

    1. Navigate to Settings > Users & accounts > OnePlus Account and tap on Edit in the Omoji section.
    2. You can select one of the existing avatars as your default Omoji or create a new one.
    3. Take your time crafting the perfect Omoji using the plethora of styles that are available.
    4. Once done, click on save and your Omoji should now be ready for use!

Surprisingly, for a fresh new feature, Omoji already has a commendable list of styles and accessories that you can use to customize your avatar. You get the usual customization options to define your Omoji, such as skin tone, eye and hair color, and facial hair options. You can also add accessories such as hats, glasses, and earrings to further personalize your avatar.

Your Omoji avatar doesn’t have a body that you can stylize with clothing and accessories like you could with a Bitmoji for example, although you still get a few options to choose neckwear.

Use Your Omoji as the Always On Display

While this Animoji ripoff is designed quite well with a slew of customization options, its implementation, unfortunately, is far from being as fun to use as one would hope. For now, the only meaningful use-case scenario for an Omoji is for you to showcase it on the Always On Display alongside the time and your notifications.

    1. Open the Settings app and head to Wallpapers & style > Always-On Display.
    2. Under the Personalized carousel, scroll until you find the Omoji option.
    3. If you’ve selected the Omoji of your choice, you should be able to choose one out of three expressions that will show up on your Always On Display.
    4. Tap on Save and you’re good to go!

Every time you glance over your phone or trigger its Always On Display, your Omoji should play out the selected animation and give a distinct look to your phone.

Add a Personal Touch to Your Phone

The reason why Apple’s Animoji took off was that it gave people a chance to add a personal touch to their messages or calls by using a custom avatar that was unique to them. Omoji on OnePlus phones can help people in the Android realm feel the same. OyxgenOS 13 has all the tools required to make a great custom avatar and just needs to implement the feature well.

We would love to see the ability to use an Omoji as a sticker that you could then send to your friends using instant messaging. Omoji already has pretty decent facial tracking too, and this could be a quirky yet fun feature to have in video calls. Hopefully that will be added in a future version of OxygenOS.
