The company does not link this data to individual user accounts, and it did not train its foundational AI models on user data. Meta also mentions that it may process information about individuals, even if they do not have accounts, to improve its AI.

Meta provides a form in its privacy center where users can request to delete any personal information from third parties used for training the company’s AI. However, Meta reviews these requests to ensure compliance with local laws before acting on them. Some users, like Alanna Smith, have found the form difficult to use and question how they can provide proof that their data has been used. Media economics professor Brett Caraway suggests that users consider not using the platform altogether if they have concerns about their data being used for AI training. While Meta AI cannot be disabled, users have the option to mute it by tapping on the Meta AI circle in the search bar.

Meta’s privacy center states that the chatbot saves messages, AI responses, and user details to continue conversations. Users can view the information saved by Meta by typing specific commands in the chat window or account center. By typing /reset-ai in individual chats with Meta AI, users can essentially reset the AI by deleting the messages and previous context of the conversation. Caraway advises users to consider how platforms may use their information for AI training when posting content on social media. He suggests being cautious, as most platforms may potentially use AI tools now or in the future.

Despite concerns raised by users, Meta spokesperson David Troya-Alvarez states that the Meta AI chatbot cannot be disabled. Users have the option to mute the chatbot and can view the information saved in their conversations with Meta AI. The chatbot uses this information to make personalized recommendations. While some users have requested to opt out of their data being used for AI training, it is unclear how many have been successful in doing so. Caraway recommends that users evaluate their usage of social media platforms and be mindful of how their information could be used by AI models. He emphasizes the importance of understanding the potential impact of sharing information online, especially in the age of AI technology.
