The Georgia state senate investigation committee is holding its fourth hearing as part of its probe into alleged misconduct by District Attorney Fani Willis. Witness Amanda Timpson, who served as Willis’ director of juvenile diversion programs, is expected to provide sworn testimony regarding the misuse of federal grant funds, leading to her demotion and eventual termination after speaking out as a whistleblower. The committee aims to investigate allegations of misconduct by Willis, including potential conflicts of interest and misuse of public funds.

Willis recently won her primary election by a significant margin over her Democratic challenger, emphasizing the importance of safety, dignity, and equality under the law. She has been at the forefront of the 2020 election interference case against former President Donald Trump, but faces criticism for her alleged improper affair with special prosecutor Nathan Wade, whom she hired for the case. The GOP-controlled Senate formed a special committee in January to investigate Willis following revelations of the romantic affair.

Previous state senate committee hearings revealed concerns about oversight of Willis’ $36 million budget, with testimony suggesting that there was little control over how taxpayer dollars were being spent. Willis had broad discretion over the budget, including whether to hire a special prosecutor and determine their compensation. The committee aims to shed light on the lack of oversight and control over these funds, which were distributed without proper approval or transparency.

Ashleigh Merchant, lawyer for Trump co-defendant Michael Roman, testified that Willis received a $780,000 budget increase in September 2021, shortly before Wade was hired and the special grand jury was convened. Willis claimed the funds were to hire additional staff to address a backlog of homicide cases, but denied requests for information on the new hires requested through open records requests. The committee is investigating these budget increases and their allocation to determine if they were used appropriately.

Willis is not expected to testify at the Thursday hearing and has previously criticized the committee as unlawful, though they have subpoena power to compel her testimony. The committee has been met with resistance from Willis, but continues to investigate allegations of misconduct. The focus of the investigation remains on potential conflicts of interest, misuse of public funds, and lack of transparency in budget allocations. The committee seeks to uphold accountability and oversight in government spending to ensure that taxpayer dollars are used appropriately.

Thursday’s hearing is expected to begin at 1:30 p.m. ET and will include testimony from various witnesses regarding allegations against Willis. The committee will continue to investigate the misconduct allegations and determine the extent of improper conduct by the District Attorney. The probe aims to shed light on any conflicts of interest, mismanagement of public funds, and lack of oversight in Willis’ office, with the goal of upholding integrity and transparency in government operations.
